On the 17 February 1945, while attempting to return to its home base at Attlebridge near Norwich, a stricken B-24 Liberator bomber crashed down Roddy Lane, Field Dalling, resulting in the deaths of not only its crew but also two Italian POW farm labourers. A small team of local people with a strong interest in the story have researched these events and have also retrieved several crash items confirming the plane’s identity and exact location of the crash site. It has been proposed there should be a small memorial stone and plaque to mark the location and honour the men whose lives were so suddenly cut short in this very significant part of our history. The memorial is being installed at the location of the crash, which at this time of year especially, is a very muddy farm track on the outskirts of Field Dalling. In recognition of these significant access limitations, the dedication event will actually be held in the Village Hall, Holt Road, Field Dalling, NR25 7LE, at 10.30 am on Monday 17th February 2020.
